INL and testing partner Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation conduct Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) testing as part of their conduct of DOE's Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity. PHEVs and EREVs are similar to hybrid electric vehicles with a few exceptions - PHEVs and EREVs have much larger battery packs, allowing for increased all-electric and/or electric-assist range, and PHEVs and EREVs must be connected to the electric grid to fully recharge the onboard traction energy storage devices (normally batteries). The AVTA's activities include:

• Development of the PHEV / EREV Integrated Test Plan and Evaluation Program, which is used to conduct accelerated onroad and baseline performance (dynamometer and test track) testing
• Onroad data collection is also used in order to benchmark vehicle and charging profiles in real-world applications that include fleet and private operators
• Early test results (see below) mostly covered vehicles from conversion companies with the most recent vehicles tested are generally from original equipment manufacturers
